Hi, I'm GemHi, my name is Gem and that's because I'm a little gem as well as a little miracle!   I am about a year old and, as you can see, I've had a very rough start to life.  I'm undersized for my age right now and I'm being treated for demodex.  Despite all that, my foster Dad says that I'm a lover and now that I'm under the care of the nice people at LSBR, I'm well on my way to recovery and hopefully a wonderful life!    Read More...
Help Gem today by making a donation to LSBR to aid in her care and recovery.

Meet the Volunteers!

LSBR has many, many volunteers - and we are grateful for each and every one of them for their participation in our group. Below are a few of our volunteers that are board members, or fill a aprticular role for LSBR.

Want to become a volunteer for LSBR?

Sharon has been part of Lone Star Boxer Rescue since the year 2000. This rescue is near and dear to her heart as she has seen it grow from a very small group to a very large group of volunteers. We take pride in doing the best job we can resulting in saving hundreds of boxers in our area. Sharon has met so many wonderful people through this organization and looks forward to doing more great work in the future. Meet Sharon's two personal dogs, Boris and Natasha who will be 10 years old this December!

debbie-bio-V2Debbie  has been a volunteer with LSBR since 2002 when she first adopted Jake, a one eyed, 3 legged boxer!  She fell in love with him and soon ended up being the foster who wanted to take the dogs which were more medically-challenged.  Through the years, Debbie has fostered several dogs with cancer, dogs which needed amuputation, dogs with broken legs, dogs which always seemed to need the extra care to survive.

In Debbies words: Personally, I have a tendency to favor the senior dogs as they are the ones who deserve dignity and grace in their later years.  Doing rescue for me has been very rewarding as I have seen so many of my fosters placed in loving homes and love more than anything hearing from their new families about how well they are doing and how loved they are now.  Seeing so many come from shelters and also from unhealthy situations and then seeing them strong and living with a family which dotes on them is the most rewarding feeling.  In addition, I have met many new friends doing rescue, people who share the same passion as I do.

Debbie is currently the Vice President of LSBR, handle intake with Sharon, owner and stray surrenders, make vetting appointments, manage the vet records, work with foster families, and help show dogs.  She enjoys watching our group continue to grow each year.

 Jen ...coming soon!

Alicia got involved with LSBR when she first put an application in to adopt a boxer friend for her then 8 year old boxer Chavez.  After the adoption she felt it would be rewarding to volunteer and try and help more dogs find homes.  Alicia has been involved with LSBR since September 2007. She has met so many great people and dogs and is very happy that she decided to work with this organization.  Rescue is very rewarding, while it is not always easy, Alicia has learned so much and knows that whatever she and other volunteers can do to help will mean more dogs being saved.  Currently Alicia serves as a board member as well as  processing the applications, helping to show dogs on adoption days and fosters for LSBR.   Pictures of her crew are coming soon!

Elizabeth became involved in rescue work when she adopted her first, a Vizsla, in 1968 from the San Antonio Humane Society. Her next 3 adoptions were Doberman's; she became involved with LSBR in 2005. Elizabeth has had 2 "foster failures", Broc and Daisy Duke. Sadly, they both have passed on to the Rainbow Bridge. If love could have saved them, they would have lived forever. In April 2008 Elizabeth took in another foster girl, Delany, which she has nursed back to health.  She' too has become a "foster failure".

Elizabeth is the volunteer coordinator for LSBR along with doing home visits, helping with Mobile Adoptions, transporting dogs, walking and bathing dogs and showing dogs to prospective adopters on weekends. She has also been a volunteer with Special Olympics Texas for over 20 years. She delivers pet food for Interfaith Ministries Meals on Wheels program.  She has been a member of the Fluor Community Involvement Team Steering Committee, a volunteer organization at work, for 15 years.

Elizabeth also saves other fellow volunteers from hunger attacks by making sure we have substantial snacks at adoption events.

Charlotte loves the boxer breed and knew she wanted to help them.  In the summer of 2005 she found our web site and joined LSBR; the rest is history.  Charlotte is LSBR's mobile adoption coordinator and dutifully gives up every other Saturday to give our dogs some exposure at local PetsMarts and other retail stores.
LSBR attends events throughout the year which helps us spread the word around our cause - Charlotte coordinates all of those for us from getting our name on the "guest" list, to coordinating volunteers (and dogs!) to attend. She also checks/answers the volunteer line, shows dogs, attends most of the events we host and opens up her home to our dogs.

Nancy Nancy and her husband Duke have been boxer lovers since 1987, when they got their first boxer puppy, Latka. They soon saw the error of their ways (buying puppies from a home breeder) and the rest of their boxers have been adopted. When they discovered LSBR and adopted Mika in 2004, Nancy became an active volunteer in the organization and participated in various activities until she found her niche in writing the bios for all of our precious pups. She also serves as the resident editor for the group and helps with PR activities. Nancy does home visits when she can and she has recently given the LSBR newsletter a new life.  If you have news that you want to share or updates about the dogs you are fostering, be sure to pass those on to Nancy.

Kathryn began volunteering with her husband Mario in March 2007. They were considering getting a third boxer when they met a boxer gal at the park named Princess, who ate grass and had come from LSBR. They decided that instead of adopting a third, they would become foster parents for LSBR...they were immediately hooked.

While in Houston, Mario and Kathryn attended adoption events, fostered dogs, and Kathryn contributed to the web site. In May 2008 they moved to Chicago and while they are no longer in the same physical location, Kathryn still supports the web site and provides "tech" support whenever she can for other volunteers. Oh, and they are foster failures...they adopted their final foster girl Tula before their trek to the windy city (she's the silly one with the tail in the pic).
